The A.H. Fox Gun Company was founded by Ansley Herman Fox in Philadelphia in 1905, and over the next quarter century it earned a reputation for the finest American-made side-by-side shotguns. President Theodore Roosevelt, who carried an FE-grade Fox on his 1909 African safari, called it "the most beautiful gun made in America." The boxlock action was elegant, strong, and famously reliable — a true American answer to the great British doubles.
The line ran from the affordable, hard-working Sterlingworth to the elaborately engraved graded guns, from the A grade up through the FE and Exhibition grades, prized today by collectors and upland hunters alike. Savage Arms acquired the company in 1930 and continued building Fox shotguns into the 1940s. Decades later the Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company revived the name, producing new high-grade A.H. Fox guns to the original exacting standards.
